Pulaski Assoc. past president Joe Mottle
is currently on touring the US in a RV.
Below is part of an entry in his
Internet journal regarding his recent
visit to the Crazy Horse Monument in
South Dakota. I thought that this would
be of interest to the members of the
Pulaski Association.

After the walk and breakfast we headed off on
another Vespa Excursion to Crazy Horse Monument about 10
miles away. I'm sure most of you have heard about this
endeavor which became the life's dream of a renound
American Sculptor of Polish decent. He made a pact with
the local Indian Tribes to create a suitable monument
that would honor ALL Native Americans. The creation is
only partially finished and the original sculptor,
Korchak Ziolkowski, died before even seeing the head
completed and yet it is spectacular. The sheer size is
awesome. As a comparison, the heads of Mt Rushmore would
fit in a space measured from just behind Crazy Horse's
eye to the back of his head and only half way down from
the top of his head to his neck. The arm when completed
will be 263 feet long. They recently dynamited a hole
under the arm that is 30 feet high and 20 feet wide.
More important than this being "just another statue" the
grounds surrounding the finished memorial will house the
Indian Museum of North America, Indian University of
North America and Medical Training Center and many more
other suitable acknowledgements of the contributions
made by Native Americans to our culture and lifestyle.
By the way, this project is completely funded by public
donations and purchases at the site. Ziolkowski turned
down offers for over 10 million dollars from the Federal
Government so as not to be burdened by the red tape that
would surely accompany it. Knowing how Congress
acts....he was probably right!!
While we explored the grounds we were able to visit the
late sculptor's workshop. At first I did not want to go
but MJ insisted and it was good that she did. There he
has on display, many of the special items and awards he
had received in his lifetime. One of these was a giver
for Bust of Paderewski which won him First Prize for
Sculpture at the 1939 World's Fair in New York. Also in
one of his cases was a Wood Mounted Plaque with a Logo
of the NYPD. There was a brass plate with an inscription
to Korchak from the NYC Pulaski Association of the NYPD.
It was presented to him at a ceremony in the Polish
Consulate in NYC in 1981. I stared at it for five
minutes before telling Mary that I was with the
delegation who met and presented this award to him. At
that time I was a Board Officer in that organization and
a Lieutenant in the NYPD. I was also the one who
designed and made the plaque. I used oak wood, cut it in
the shape of a shield and routed the edge. I stained it
and coated it with twenty coats of varnish for
posterity. We had a small brass plate made and I affixed
it to the logo. It came out great but I had made a
slight error when routing the edge which was only
noticeable and recognizable to me (and now Mary too
after I pointed it out to her
The plate is hard to read but it was presented in July
1981 at the Polish Consulate in NYC
